Franklin, the seat of
Macon County, is nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky
Mountains. It is along US Highways 28, 64 and 23/441, with easy
access to Interstates I-40, I-26 and I-85. Franklin is 14 miles
from the Georgia line, 35 miles from the South Carolina line,
and about 45 miles from the Tennessee line.
Long known as the
"Gem Capital of the World," Franklin has many active gem mines.
The Appalachian tradition is honored and treasured with ramp
hunts, tale-swapping, bluegrass, square dancing and clogging.
Spectacular waterfalls, hiking trails, fishing
streams and abundant wildlife are among the area's many natural,
mountain treasures. The unspoiled beauty of the Nantahala
National Forest, North Carolina's largest national forest is a
virtual paradise. The Mountain Waters Scenic Byway winds through
southern Appalachian hardwood forest, 2 river gorges and rural
